Port Development
Horn Relief, an organization founded by Somali environmentalist Fatima Jibrell, is re-developing the 400 year old port in Las Khorey with the aim of creating immediate employment for local residents. Over the long-term, this effort is intended to help restore import and export opportunities to Somalia's northern coastal region, and thus also assist in rebuilding livelihoods.
In addition, this infrastructure and governance project involves collaboration between the communities in and around Las Khorey and the private sector, including traders in the northern hinterland. It is hoped that this will stimulate new trade and infrastructural investments in the Las Khorey area.
In 2012, a team of engineers was also enlisted by the Puntland authorities to assess the ongoing renovations taking place at the port. According to the Minister of Ports, Saeed Mohamed Ragge, the Puntland government intends to launch more such development projects in Las Khorey.

Famous quotes containing the words port and/or development:
“When we think back to our forefathers, with their sedentary lives of forest-chopping, railroad-building, fortune-founding, their fox-hunting and Indian taming, their prancing about in the mazurka and the polka, with their coattails flying and their bustles bouncing, to say nothing of their all-day sessions with the port and straight bourbon,... we must realize that we are a nation, not of neurasthenics, but of sissies and slow-motion sports.”
—Robert Benchley (18891945)
“The work of adult life is not easy. As in childhood, each step presents not only new tasks of development but requires a letting go of the techniques that worked before. With each passage some magic must be given up, some cherished illusion of safety and comfortably familiar sense of self must be cast off, to allow for the greater expansion of our distinctiveness.”
—Gail Sheehy (20th century)
