Languages Of The United Kingdom

The de facto official language of the United Kingdom is English (British English), which is spoken as the primary language of 95% of the UK population. The Welsh language is also an official language in Wales, and is the second most spoken language in the United Kingdom. In addition, there are several other living languages indigenous to the territory, various regional dialects, and numerous languages spoken by recent immigrant populations and those who have learned them as second languages.

Famous quotes containing the words languages, united and/or kingdom:

It is time for dead languages to be quiet.
    Natalie Clifford Barney (1876–1972)

An inquiry about the attitude towards the release of so-called political prisoners. I should be very sorry to see the United States holding anyone in confinement on account of any opinion that that person might hold. It is a fundamental tenet of our institutions that people have a right to believe what they want to believe and hold such opinions as they want to hold without having to answer to anyone for their private opinion.
    Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933)

    Joseph De Maistre (1753–1821)
