Blood Testing
Blood tests for lactate are performed to determine the status of the acid base homeostasis in the body. Blood sampling for this purpose is often by arterial blood sampling (even if it is more difficult than venipuncture), because lactate differs substantially between arterial and venous levels, and the arterial level is more representative for this purpose.
| Lower limit | Upper limit | Unit | |
| Venous | 4.5 | 19.8 | mg/dL |
| 0.5 | 2.2 | mmol/L | |
| Arterial | 4.5 | 14.4 | mg/dL |
| 0.5 | 1.6 | mmol/L |
During childbirth, lactate levels in the fetus can be quantified by fetal scalp blood testing.

Famous quotes containing the words blood and/or testing:
“He was a foola brilliant man and I loved his beard, and there was the mountain ax in his brain, and all the blood poured out, and he could not see the Mexican sun. Your people raised the ax, and the last blood of revolutionary mankind, his poor blood, ran into the carpet.”
—Norman Mailer (b. 1923)
“Bourbons the only drink. You can take all that champagne stuff and pour it down the English Channel. Well, why wait 80 years before you can drink the stuff? Great vineyards, huge barrels aging forever, poor little old monks running around testing it, just so some woman in Tulsa, Oklahoma can say it tickles her nose.”
—John Michael Hayes (b.1919)
