La Digue - Government Services

Government Services

Being an island with a population of only 2000 people, there are not too many government buildings or services and many people have to go to Praslin for satisfying their advanced needs. On La Digue, there is one post office which is closed on Sundays (similarly to quite a number of other services). There is also a small police station, but this was mainly set up for the tourists. Lastly, there is a small hospital, although some inhabitants of La Digue prefer to visit the hospitals in Praslin and Victoria. Pregnant women usually go to Victoria to give birth.

Famous quotes containing the words government and/or services:

There are obvious places in which government can narrow the chasm between haves and have-nots. One is the public schools, which have been seen as the great leveler, the authentic melting pot. That, today, is nonsense. In his scathing study of the nation’s public school system entitled “Savage Inequalities,” Jonathan Kozol made manifest the truth: that we have a system that discriminates against the poor in everything from class size to curriculum.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)

    It seems I impregnated Marge
So I do rather feel, by and large,
    Some cash should be tendered
    For services rendered,
But I can’t quite decide what to charge.
