Koro (medicine)

Koro is a culture-specific syndrome in which the person has an overpowering belief that his penis (or other genitalia) will retract and disappear. Also known as shrinking penis, the syndrome is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The syndrome occurs worldwide with epidemics and mass hysteria of genital-shrinkage or disappearance occurring throughout history in Africa, Asia, and Europe. In the United States and Europe, the syndrome is commonly known as Genital Retraction Syndrome.
