Kingdom of Israel (Samaria)

Kingdom Of Israel (Samaria)

The Kingdom of Israel (Hebrew: מַמְלֶכֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל, Mamlekhet Yisra'el Mamléḵeṯ Yiśrāʼēl) was, according to the Bible, one of the successor states to the older United Monarchy (also often called the 'Kingdom of Israel'). It was thought to exist roughly from the 930s BCE until about the 720s BCE, when the kingdom was conquered by the Assyrian Empire. The major cities of the kingdom were Shechem, Tirzah, and Shomron (Samaria).

Historians often refer to ancient Israel as the Northern Kingdom to differentiate it from the Southern Kingdom of Judah.

Famous quotes containing the words kingdom and/or israel:

Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Bible: New Testament Jesus, in John, 3:3.

    Spoken to the Pharisee Nicodemus.

For in the division of the nations of the whole earth he set a ruler over every people; but Israel is the Lord’s portion: whom, being his firstborn, he nourisheth with discipline, and giving him the light of his love doth not forsake him. Therefore all their works are as the sun before him, and his eyes are continually upon their ways.
    Apocrypha. Ecclesiasticus 17:17-9.
