Kingdom of God - Hebrew Bible

Hebrew Bible

The "kingdom of the LORD" is referred to in the Tanakh (see 1 Chronicles, 1Chronicles 29:10-12 and Daniel 4:3 for example). It is tied to Jewish understanding that God will restore the nation of Israel to the land, following the Abrahamic covenant.

When speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, God tells Moses that the Israelites "will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." The priest as king is mentioned in early Judaic writings. "Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High". In Second Chronicles the LORD said, "My Name will remain in Jerusalem forever." Cyrus king of Persia agreed and is quoted as saying: " 'The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. The prophet Zechariah taught of a king of Jerusalem, stating "Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey.
