Kevin Keegan - Early Years

Early Years

Keegan was born in Armthorpe in Doncaster to English parents of part Irish ancestry and attended his local school, Armthorpe Comprehensive, Armthorpe, South Yorkshire in Doncaster. As a schoolboy, Keegan had a trial for league side Coventry City, under manager Jimmy Hill. Despite being one of two players kept on for an extra six-week period, the club did not offer Keegan a contract. At the age of 16, Keegan was spotted playing at amateur level for Pegler, his employer at the time, and signed by Division 4's Scunthorpe United – one of just two professional sides in the division.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or years:

Everyone in our culture wants to win a prize. Perhaps that is the grand lesson we have taken with us from kindergarten in the age of perversions of Dewey-style education: everyone gets a ribbon, and praise becomes a meaningless narcotic to soothe egoistic distemper.
    —Gerald Early (b. 1952)

Jane Grey Swisshelm, U.S. newspaperwoman, abolitionist, and human rights activist. Half a Century, ch. 8 (1880)
