Kerala Congress

The Kerala Congress is a recognized State political party in Kerala, India and the only regional party in the state.

The party was founded by K. M. George in October 1964 after a group of legislators decided to break from the Indian National Congress.

The party has its roots in the Congress in Travancore and is traditionally dominated by the farmers in the state, mostly the Saint Thomas Christians and with an important presence of Nairs; however leaders from all communities are represented.

The party distinctively argues for the rights and privileges of Kerala state in a political spectrum which otherwise consists of state bodies of parties owing allegiance to various `high commands' at the national level.

Famous quotes containing the word congress:

The veto is a President’s Constitutional right, given to him by the drafters of the Constitution because they wanted it as a check against irresponsible Congressional action. The veto forces Congress to take another look at legislation that has been passed. I think this is a responsible tool for a president of the United States, and I have sought to use it responsibly.
    Gerald R. Ford (b. 1913)
