Computing The Planetary Acceleration
In his Principia Mathematica Philosophiae Naturalis, Newton showed that Kepler's laws imply that the acceleration of the planets are directed towards the sun and depend on the distance from the sun by the inverse square law. However, the geometrical method used by Newton to prove the result is quite complicated. The demonstration below is based on calculus.

Famous quotes containing the word planetary:
“We cannot cheat on DNA. We cannot get round photosynthesis. We cannot say I am not going to give a damn about phytoplankton. All these tiny mechanisms provide the preconditions of our planetary life. To say we do not care is to say in the most literal sense that we choose death.”
—Barbara Ward (19141981)
