Kamiakin High School - Academics

Academics

Kamiakin High is generally considered to be one of the highest ranked public high schools in all of southeastern Washington of size 3A or 4A (along with Hanford High School in nearby Richland) and is ranked among the top 1,500 best high schools in the nation by Newsweek. The school's HSPE scores annually rank among the statewide leaders, and almost always leads the Tri-Cities area. Kamiakin's DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America—the national high school marketing club) program sends more students to the state competition than any of the other area schools, despite the disparity in student population with several other regional high schools. The school's Knowledge Bowl and Math Competition teams are also frequent winners at state competitions. In 2007, 505 AP Exams were given. (Kamiakin does not pay for or subsidize AP tests except for highly underprivileged students, but some teachers do require an AP test as a portion of the class. Each student may choose whether or not to take the test and must pay full price should he or she decide to take it, unless that student qualifies for a free or reduced-cost lunch.)

Famous quotes containing the word academics:

Our first line of defense in raising children with values is modeling good behavior ourselves. This is critical. How will our kids learn tolerance for others if our hearts are filled with hate? Learn compassion if we are indifferent? Perceive academics as important if soccer practice is a higher priority than homework?
    Fred G. Gosman (20th century)

Almost all scholarly research carries practical and political implications. Better that we should spell these out ourselves than leave that task to people with a vested interest in stressing only some of the implications and falsifying others. The idea that academics should remain “above the fray” only gives ideologues license to misuse our work.
    Stephanie Coontz (b. 1944)
