June Millington - With Fanny

With Fanny

June Millington and her younger sister Jean moved with their family from the Philippines to Sacramento, California in 1961. They formed their first all-girl rock band while still in school, and by 1969 had formed Fanny with June on guitar, Jean on bass, Alice de Buhr on drums, and Nickey Barclay on keyboards. Fanny was the first all-female rock band to release an album with a major label; and they eventually released five albums and achieved two top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. The band has long been considered pioneers and are highly respected by later all-women rock groups like The Go-Go's and The Runaways.

During this period June and the other members of Fanny also worked as session musicians, most notably on Barbra Streisand's 1971 album Barbra Joan Streisand. Fanny fan David Bowie said in 1999 that Fanny was "extraordinary... they're as important as anybody else who's ever been, ever; it just wasn't their time." June Millington left Fanny after their 1973 album Mother's Pride; the band made one more album and then split.
