In 2008, Marichal was filmed at a cockfight in the Dominican Republic along with New York Mets pitcher Pedro MartÃnez. The incident caused controversy in the United States, but Martinez defended their attendance at the cockfight by saying "I understand that people are upset, but that is part of our Dominican culture and is legal in the Dominican Republic". He added "I was invited by my idol, Juan Marichal, to attend the event as a spectator, not as a participant."
