Legacy
Inspired by Woolman's life and spirit, John Woolman School (http://www.woolman.org) was established in Nevada City, California, in 1963 as a college-preparatory boarding school, serving students in grades 10-12 (later 9-12). The school today is a single-semester residential program that provides an experiential education in the principles of peace, social justice and sustainability for high school juniors, seniors and post-graduates. In a separate effort, a group of scholars of peace and justice studies decided in 2003 to establish John Woolman College of Active Peace, which seeks to 'mainstream' many Quaker (and other) beliefs and practices around peace and peacemaking into higher education.
The Journal of John Woolman is not only considered to be an important spiritual document, but also a classic in English literature, as shown by its inclusion in the Harvard Classics. It is reportedly the longest-published book in the history of North America other than the Bible, having been continuously published since before the 1776 revolution.
