Death

Thompson died at the age of 79 on June 21, 1940 and is buried on the grounds of the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. Shortly after his death, the brink of U.S. entry into World War II prompted the Army to order the Thompson submachine gun in large quantities, and it was used extensively during that conflict.

Famous quotes containing the word death:

One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And Death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die!
    John Donne (c. 1572–1631)

You stars that reigned at my nativity,
Whose influence hath allotted death and hell.
    Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593)

Since the death instinct exists in the heart of everything that lives, since we suffer from trying to repress it, since everything that lives longs for rest, let us unfasten the ties that bind us to life, let us cultivate our death wish, let us develop it, water it like a plant, let it grow unhindered. Suffering and fear are born from the repression of the death wish.
    Eugène Ionesco (b. 1912)
