Famous quotes containing the word work:
“But it isnt only the terror everywhere, and the fear of being conscious of it, that freezes people. Its more than that. People know they are in a society dead or dying. They are refusing emotion because at the end of very emotion are property, money, power. They work and despise their work, and so freeze themselves. They love but know that its a half- love or a twisted love, and so they freeze themselves.”
—Doris Lessing (b. 1919)
“The work of vegetation begins first in the irritability of the bark and leaf-buds.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“There is a hearty Puritanism in the view of human nature which pervades the instrument of 1787. It is the work of men who believed in original sin, and were resolved to leave open for transgressors no door which they could possibly shut.”
—James Bryce (18381922)
