John Muir - Death

Death

John Muir died at California Hospital (now California Hospital Medical Center) in Los Angeles on 24 December 1914 of pneumonia at age 76, after a brief visit to Daggett, California, to see his daughter Helen Muir Funk. John Muir was survived by two daughters and ten grandchildren, two of whom are still living as of 2011. Muir's grave is not far from the Muir home; however, his location is deliberately not broadcast, and its site is fenced due to past vandalism. The NPS will give directions on face-to-face request.

Famous quotes containing the word death:

Night is a dead monotonous period under a roof; but in the open world it passes lightly, with its stars and dews and perfumes, and the hours are marked by changes in the face of Nature. What seems a kind of temporal death to people choked between walls and curtains, is only a light and living slumber to the man who sleeps afield.
    Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894)

In every unbeliever’s heart there is an uneasy feeling that, after all, he may awake after death and find himself immortal. This is his punishment for his unbelief. This is the agnostic’s Hell.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)

It is difficult to accept death in this society because it is unfamiliar. In spite of the fact that it happens all the time, we never see it.
    Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (b. 1926)
