Op-eds by Lott have appeared in such places as the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and the Chicago Tribune. From March, 2008 until February, 2009 he was a weekly columnist for Fox News. He has also appeared on other television and radio shows and written books for non-academic, readers. Newsweek also referred to Lott as "The Gun Crowd's Guru."
