John J. Keane (bishop) - Rome

Rome

On January 29, 1897 Pope Leo XIII named him the Titular Archbishop of Damascus. He spent the years 1897 to 1899 as canon of St. John Lateran, Assistant at the Pontifical Throne, and counsellor to the Propaganda. He lived in two rooms at the Pontifical Canadian College. He was attacked during the Americanism controversy that began to sweep through Europe "as a rationalist, throwing all dogma over to modern ideas." He fought, and won, the battle to clear his name. In 1899 he was relieved of his responsibilities in Rome to raise funds for Catholic University, which was facing financial difficulties.

Famous quotes containing the word rome:

I am ashamed to see what a shallow village tale our so-called History is. How many times must we say Rome, and Paris, and Constantinople! What does Rome know of rat and lizard? What are Olympiads and Consulates to these neighboring systems of being? Nay, what food or experience or succor have they for the Esquimaux seal-hunter, or the Kanaka in his canoe, for the fisherman, the stevedore, the porter?
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
