John Desmond Bernal FRS (b. 10 May 1901 in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, Ireland – d. 15 September 1971 in London, United Kingdom) was one of the United Kingdom's most well-known and controversial scientists. Known as "Sage" to friends, Bernal is considered a pioneer in X-ray crystallography in molecular biology.
