Personal Life and Legacy
Benbow married a woman named Martha (died 1722) after his return to England in 1681. The marriage soon produced children; including a daughter, Martha, following by sons Richard and John. John would go on to also serve in the Royal Navy. The family lived in the parish of St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, and had another son Solomon, who was baptised in 1686 but died in infancy. There are also records of two more sons named Richard who were born in Kent, and another daughter, Katherine. In 1709 Katherine married Paul Calton of Milton, Berkshire, where Benbow is said to have stayed in the 1690s.

Famous quotes containing the words personal, life and/or legacy:
“I have enjoyed greatly the second blooming that comes when you finish the life of the emotions and of personal relations; and suddenly you findat the age of fifty, saythat a whole new life has opened before you, filled with things you can think about, study, or read about.... It is as if a fresh sap of ideas and thoughts was rising in you.”
—Agatha Christie (18911976)
“Life! Life! Dont let us go to life for our fulfilment or our experience. It is a thing narrowed by circumstances, incoherent in its utterance, and without that fine correspondence of form and spirit which is the only thing that can satisfy the artistic and critical temperament. It makes us pay too high a price for its wares, and we purchase the meanest of its secrets at a cost that is monstrous and infinite.”
—Oscar Wilde (18541900)
“What is popularly called fame is nothing but an empty name and a legacy from paganism.”
—Desiderius Erasmus (c. 14661536)
