Criminal Allegations
In October of 2012, calls for Fontana's resignation as mayor were made amid allegations of misuse of government funds used to pay for his son's wedding. City councillors have urged Fontana to step aside during the investigation. As of October 30th 2012, Fontana has made no move to comply.
On November 21, 2012, the London Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police issued a press release announcing that the Public Prosecution Service of Canada has brought federal charges against Fontana for:
(1) Breach of Trust by a Public Officer;
(2) Fraud under $5000; and,
(3) Uttering Forged Documents.
If convicted of all counts, Fontana could face up to ten years' imprisonment. Fontana is scheduled to appear at the London Provincial Court House on January 8, 2013.
On November 22, 2012, Fontana offered to resign from the London Police Services Board and his resignation was formally accepted. At the next meeting of council's Finance and Administrative Services Committee; Its councillors asked that Fontanta step aside, passing by a 3-1 vote-margin that he resign his council seat and duties as mayor. The committee decision does not bind Fontana to it's decision under the Municipal Act.
