Rumoured Affair With Wallis Simpson
Ribbentrop's time in London was also marked by rumors that he was having an affair with Wallis Simpson, British-businessman Ernest Simpson's wife and King Edward VIII's mistress. According to files declassified by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, Mrs. Simpson was believed to be a regular guest at Ribbentrop's social gatherings at the German Embassy in London where it was thought the two struck up a romantic relationship. The Americans believed that Ribbentrop used Simpson's access to the King to funnel important information about the British to his superiors.
