Fontaine received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba in 1976. He first campaigned for the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba in the 1986 provincial election, contesting Lac du Bonnet as a Liberal. Famous quotes containing the words early and/or career:

And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea.
    Bible: New Testament, Matthew 14:25.

“Never hug and kiss your children! Mother love may make your children’s infancy unhappy and prevent them from pursuing a career or getting married!” That’s total hogwash, of course. After all, that was the heyday of efficiency experts, time-and-motion studies, and the like.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
