Jennie George - Early Life

Early Life

She was born Eugenie Sinicky in Trani, Italy, where her parents were displaced persons from the Soviet Union. She was educated at the Burwood Girls High School, Sydney University and the Sydney Teachers College.

George was a Secondary school teacher and teacher trade unionist, and was elected General Secretary of the New South Wales Teachers Federation 1980-82. Journalist Brad Norrington alleged that during the 1960s and early 1970s she was a member of the Communist Party of Australia; George denies this.

Famous quotes containing the words early life, early and/or life:

Many a woman shudders ... at the terrible eclipse of those intellectual powers which in early life seemed prophetic of usefulness and happiness, hence the army of martyrs among our married and unmarried women who, not having cultivated a taste for science, art or literature, form a corps of nervous patients who make fortunes for agreeable physicians ...
    Sarah M. Grimke (1792–1873)

    —Gerald Early (b. 1952)

It’s not the men in my life, but the life in my men.
    Mae West (1892–1980)
