Background
The JNDI API is used by the Java RMI and Java EE APIs to look up objects in a network.
The API provides:
- a mechanism to bind an object to a name
- a directory lookup interface that allows general queries
- an event interface that allows clients to determine when directory entries have been modified
- LDAP extensions to support the additional capabilities of an LDAP service
The SPI portion allows support for practically any kind of naming or directory service including:
- LDAP
- DNS
- NIS
- CORBA name service
- File system
The JNDI specification was first released by Sun Microsystems on March 10, 1997. As of 2006, the current version is JNDI 1.2.

Famous quotes containing the word background:
“Silence is the universal refuge, the sequel to all dull discourses and all foolish acts, a balm to our every chagrin, as welcome after satiety as after disappointment; that background which the painter may not daub, be he master or bungler, and which, however awkward a figure we may have made in the foreground, remains ever our inviolable asylum, where no indignity can assail, no personality can disturb us.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“They were more than hostile. In the first place, I was a south Georgian and I was looked upon as a fiscal conservative, and the Atlanta newspapers quite erroneously, because they didnt know anything about me or my background here in Plains, decided that I was also a racial conservative.”
—Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
“... every experience in life enriches ones background and should teach valuable lessons.”
—Mary Barnett Gilson (1877?)
