Janez Puhar

Janez Avguštin Puhar (August 26, 1814 - August 7, 1864) was a Slovene priest, photographer, painter, and poet. He invented a process for making photographs on glass in 1841; it was recognized on June 17, 1852 in Paris by the Académie Nationale Agricole, Manufacturière et Commerciale.

The "Janez Puhar Photo Society Kranj" is the oldest Slovene photographic society. It was established in 1910 and is based in Kranj.

His grandniece was the pedagogue Helena Puhar, mother of the punk singer and sociologist Gregor Tomc and author and human rights activist Alenka Puhar.
