The Jammu & Kashmir National Conference is a State political party in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Led at the time of Indian independence in 1947 by Sheikh Abdullah, it dominated electoral politics in the state for many decades. It has been led subsequently by the Sheikh's son Farooq Abdullah (1981–2002) and his son Omar Abdullah (2002–2009). Farooq Abdullah was again made the President of the party in 2009.
Famous quotes containing the words national and/or conference:
“Perhaps our national ambition to standardize ourselves has behind it the notion that democracy means standardization. But standardization is the surest way to destroy the initiative, to benumb the creative impulse above all else essential to the vitality and growth of democratic ideals.”
—Ida M. Tarbell (18571944)
“For 350 years we have been taught that reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man and writing an exact man. Footballs place is to add a patina of character, a deference to the rules and a respect for authority.”
—Walter Wellesley (Red)
