James Henry Scullin (18 September 1876 – 28 January 1953), Australian Labor politician and the ninth Prime Minister of Australia. Two days after he was sworn in as Prime Minister following the 1929 House-only election, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 occurred, marking the beginning of the Great Depression and subsequent Great Depression in Australia. In addition, the Scullin government held only a fifth of all Senate seats. In social policy, the Canberra University College was established, while the responsibilities of the Commonwealth Literary Fund were expanded to “foster new Australian writers and promote the appreciation of Australian literature.”
