Replacement Bridge Without Tolls: 1975-1982
A new four-lane lift bridge was completed in stages from 1975 to 1982 at a cost of $75 million. The replacement was funded with road user taxes rather than toll revenue bonds. When the new bridge was completed, a short section of the old bridge on the Newport News side was retained for use as a fishing pier.

Famous quotes containing the words replacement and/or bridge:
“Not even the visionary or mystical experience ever lasts very long. It is for art to capture that experience, to offer it to, in the case of literature, its readers; to be, for a secular, materialist culture, some sort of replacement for what the love of god offers in the world of faith.”
—Salman Rushdie (b. 1947)
“I was at work that morning. Someone came riding like mad
Over the bridge and up the roadFarmer Roufs little lad.
Bareback he rode; he had no hat; he hardly stopped to say,
Morgans men are coming, Frau, theyre galloping on this way.”
—Constance Fenimore Woolson (18401894)
