James Packer - Life and Career

Life and Career

Packer is the son of Roslyn (née Weedon) and the late media mogul, Kerry Francis Bullmore Packer, and grandson of Frank Packer. Packer was born in Sydney, Australia. He was educated at Cranbrook School in Bellevue Hill, Sydney. After obtaining the Higher School Certificate (HSC) at Cranbrook, Kerry decided it was time to toughen his son up to prepare him for the world of business. He was sent to his father's extensive Newcastle Waters cattle station in the Barkly Tableland of the Northern Territory, where he worked as a jackeroo. His father dismissed the idea of sending young James to university by saying "Why would he want to go there? To learn how to smoke marijuana?"

Besides his father, his toughest mentor has been Albert J. Dunlap.

Famous quotes containing the words life and/or career:

The child begins life as a pleasure-seeking animal; his infantile personality is organized around his own appetites and his own body. In the course of his rearing the goal of exclusive pleasure seeking must be modified drastically, the fundamental urges must be subject to the dictates of conscience and society, urges must be capable of postponement and in some instances of renunciation completely.
    Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)

Whether lawyer, politician or executive, the American who knows what’s good for his career seeks an institutional rather than an individual identity. He becomes the man from NBC or IBM. The institutional imprint furnishes him with pension, meaning, proofs of existence. A man without a company name is a man without a country.
    Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)
