Famous quotes containing the words public, media and/or appearances:

What the public wants is the image of passion, not passion itself.
    Roland Barthes (1915–1980)

The media network has its idols, but its principal idol is its own style which generates an aura of winning and leaves the rest in darkness. It recognises neither pity nor pitilessness.
    John Berger (b. 1926)

We often think ourselves inconsistent creatures, when we are the furthest from it, and all the variety of shapes and contradictory appearances we put on, are in truth but so many different attempts to gratify the same governing appetite.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)
