Cartier spent the rest of his life in Saint-Malo and his nearby estate, where he often was useful as an interpreter in Portuguese. He died at age 65/66 on September 1, 1557 during an epidemic, possibly typhus, though many sources list his cause of death as unknown. Cartier is interred in St. Vincent's Cathedral.
No permanent European settlements were made in Canada before 1605, when Samuel Champlain founded |Port Royal in present day Victoria Beach just outside of Annapolis Royal.

Famous quotes containing the word life:
“All conservatives are such from personal defects. They have been effeminated by position or nature, born halt and blind, through luxury of their parents, and can only, like invalids, act on the defensive. But strong natures, backwoodsmen, New Hampshire giants, Napoleons, Burkes, Broughams, Websters, Kossuths, are inevitable patriots, until their life ebbs, and their defects and gout, palsy and money, warp them.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The end of a life is always vivifying.”
—Samuel Beckett (19061989)
