In the novels Patriot Games occurs before The Hunt for Red October, though the order was reversed in the film versions.

The Sum of All Fears is not part of Baldwin/Ford series, but rather an intended reboot of the franchise which departs significantly from the chronology of the novels. It takes place in 2002 whereas the novel takes place in 1991/1992. Jack Ryan is a second reboot of the franchise and departs from all previous films.

On March 18, 2008, Variety reported that Sam Raimi and Paramount Pictures were in negotiations to have Raimi direct another reboot, intending Raimi to go on to spearhead multiple sequels. At the time, Tom Clancy was writing a new novel but Paramount had not decided whether to use this new story or create an original story.

It was reported in October 2009 by Hollywood.com and cinemablend.com that Chris Pine was in talks to play Jack Ryan in another reboot of the franchise. Paramount hired David Koepp to rewrite the script and Kenneth Branagh to direct the film and also he will play the main villain. The studio cast Keira Knightley for the female lead of Caroline Ryan, beating Evangeline Lilly, Felicity Jones and Total Recall stars Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel for the role.

The reboot is scheduled to be released on December 25, 2013.

Famous quotes containing the word films:

Television does not dominate or insist, as movies do. It is not sensational, but taken for granted. Insistence would destroy it, for its message is so dire that it relies on being the background drone that counters silence. For most of us, it is something turned on and off as we would the light. It is a service, not a luxury or a thing of choice.
David Thomson, U.S. film historian. America in the Dark: The Impact of Hollywood Films on American Culture, ch. 8, William Morrow (1977)

The cinema is not an art which films life: the cinema is something between art and life. Unlike painting and literature, the cinema both gives to life and takes from it, and I try to render this concept in my films. Literature and painting both exist as art from the very start; the cinema doesn’t.
    Jean-Luc Godard (b. 1930)
