As the books were published in the early days of political correctness, Hackney Public Libraries banned the entire series because of the Indian elephant keeper, called Barni. They thought ethnic minorities might be offended by him.

Famous quotes containing the word books:
“Proverbs, like the sacred books of each nation, are the sanctuary of the intuitions. That which the droning world, chained to appearances, will not allow the realist to say in his own words, it will suffer him to say in proverbs without contradiction.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“With a few exceptions, the critics of childrens books are remarkably lenient souls.... Most of us assume there is something good in every child; the critics go from this to assume there is something good in every book written for a child. It is not a sound theory.”
—Katharine S. White (18921977)
“The society would permit no books of fiction in its collection because the town fathers believed that fiction worketh abomination and maketh a lie.”
—For the State of Rhode Island, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
