Iterated Function - Lie's Data Transport Equation

Lie's Data Transport Equation

Iterated functions crop up in the series expansion of the combined functions, such as g(f(x)). Given the iteration velocity, or beta function (physics), for the nth iterate of the function f, we have

g(f(x)) = \exp\left g(x).

For example, for rigid advection, if f(x) = x + a, then v(x) = a. Consequently g(x + a) = exp(a ∂/∂x) g(x), a plain shift operator.

Famous quotes containing the words lie, data, transport and/or equation:

I will name you the degrees. The first, the Retort Courteous; the second, the Quip Modest; the third, the Reply Churlish; the fourth, the Reproof Valiant; the fifth, the Countercheck Quarrelsome; the sixth, the Lie with Circumstance; the seventh, the Lie Direct.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

To write it, it took three months; to conceive it three minutes; to collect the data in it—all my life.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)

One may disavow and disclaim vices that surprise us, and whereto our passions transport us; but those which by long habits are rooted in a strong and ... powerful will are not subject to contradiction. Repentance is but a denying of our will, and an opposition of our fantasies.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)

A nation fights well in proportion to the amount of men and materials it has. And the other equation is that the individual soldier in that army is a more effective soldier the poorer his standard of living has been in the past.
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)
