Plot
The story is set during the Second World War, in the Royal Artillery Depot, Deolali, India, where soldiers are kept before going to the front line. The soldiers include Bombardier/Gunner Gloria Beaumont, an effeminate cowardly actor who loves dressing up as woman in shows and is petrified of and detests the army, Gunner Lofty Sugden, a short, fat soldier, who wears a pith helmet and has a fabulous singing voice, Gunner "Parky" Parkins, a young innocent mistake-making recruit, Gunner Graham, a bald-headed university professor and student who plays the piano and came top in all his subjects, is the cleverest and brainiest of them all and is admired for it, Gunner Atlas Mackintosh, a masculine short-tempered Scotsman, Gunner Nobby Clark, a un-bright soldier who does a paper-tearing act, Gunner Nosher Evans, a soldier who does nothing but eat and sprays food when he speaks, Bombardier "Solly" Solomons, the former Jewish bombardier, who always had a trick up his sleeve. The Germans have surrendered and now they're fighting the Japanese. The soldiers spend their time working as a Concert Party, like in a music hall, which involves dressing up as world-famous female actresses. The soldiers all love this and dream of being world-famous actors when they leave the army They are under the command of Sergant-Major "Shut Up" Williams who is a Welsh professional soldier, who hates them and the fact that they dress up as woman and take part in shows. Williams often tries to get them sent up to fight, usally using illegal ways, and tricking or manipulating them and the officers. The soldiers often get out of these schemes and get involved in others so as to be shown off to smart audiences, with the help of their native servants, Bearer Rangi Ram who acts as their butler, Muhammed the char wallah who sells tea, Rumzan, the clever punka wallah who fans the officers and is abused by Rangi, and Ah Syn, the Chinese cook. The officers are Colonel Reynolds and Captain Ashwood, 2 lazy officers who love the concert party's shows and often take part in big military officer's parties, but never take part in soldier activities. In Series 5, the Concert Party are transferred to the village of Tin Min, Burma, very near the front lines.

Famous quotes containing the word plot:
“Trade and the streets ensnare us,
Our bodies are weak and worn;
We plot and corrupt each other,
And we despoil the unborn.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“We have defined a story as a narrative of events arranged in their time-sequence. A plot is also a narrative of events, the emphasis falling on causality. The king died and then the queen died is a story. The king died, and then the queen died of grief is a plot. The time sequence is preserved, but the sense of causality overshadows it.”
—E.M. (Edward Morgan)
“Ends in themselves, my letters plot no change;
They carry nothing dutiable; they wont
Aspire, astound, establish or estrange.”
—Philip Larkin (19221986)
