Isle of May - Wildlife

Wildlife

Because it is an important breeding site for seabirds and seals, the island is protected as part of the Forth Islands Special Protection Area.

During the height of the breeding season, over 200,000 seabirds of 14 species nest on the island, including Puffins, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Razorbills, Guillemots, Shags, Fulmars, Oystercatchers, Eider ducks, and various species of Tern and Gull.

Both Harbour Seals and Grey Seals can be seen on the island all year round, and whales are occasionally sighted in the summer.

Famous quotes containing the word wildlife:

Russian forests crash down under the axe, billions of trees are dying, the habitations of animals and birds are layed waste, rivers grow shallow and dry up, marvelous landscapes are disappearing forever.... Man is endowed with creativity in order to multiply that which has been given him; he has not created, but destroyed. There are fewer and fewer forests, rivers are drying up, wildlife has become extinct, the climate is ruined, and the earth is becoming ever poorer and uglier.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)
