Ise Province

Ise Province (伊勢国, Ise no kuni?) or Seishū (勢州?) was a province of Japan including most of modern Mie Prefecture. Ise bordered Iga, Kii, Mino, Ōmi, Owari, Shima, and Yamato Provinces.

The ancient provincial capital was at Suzuka. The modern Tsu is the largest castle town, although there were other Sengoku Period fiefs at castles like Kuwana and Matsusaka.

The World War II Japanese battleship Ise and modern helicopter carrier Ise are named after this province.

Famous quotes containing the word province:

The dramatic art would appear to be rather a feminine art; it contains in itself all the artifices which belong to the province of woman: the desire to please, facility to express emotions and hide defects, and the faculty of assimilation which is the real essence of woman.
    Sarah Bernhardt (1845–1923)
