Remains
Much of the Roman town wall survives as the lower courses or inner core of the medieval city walls, 70% of which still exist, largely built on the orders of Alfred the Great to protect the far west of his kingdom following the Viking occupation of 876.
A substantial Roman baths complex was excavated in the 1970s, but because of its proximity to the cathedral it was not practicable to retain the excavation for public view.
Finds from the Roman town, particularly the Roman Fortress Baths excavations, are displayed in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter.

Famous quotes containing the word remains:
“... religion can only change when the emotions which fill it are changed; and the religion of personal fear remains nearly at the level of the savage.”
—George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)
“To be a Negro is to participate in a culture of poverty and fear that goes far deeper than any law for or against discrimination.... After the racist statutes are all struck down, after legal equality has been achieved in the schools and in the courts, there remains the profound institutionalized and abiding wrong that white America has worked on the Negro for so long.”
—Michael Harrington (19281989)
“What of the heart without her? Nay, poor heart,
Of thee what word remains ere speech be still?
A wayfarer by barren ways and chill,
Steep ways and weary, without her thou art,
Where the long cloud, the long woods counterpart,
Sheds doubled darkness up the labouring hill.”
—Dante Gabriel Rossetti (18281882)
