The International Society for the Empirical Study of Literature (IGEL: Internationale Gesellschaft für Empirische Literaturwissenschaft) is an association of scholars who subscribe to the contextual (empirical and systemic) approach to the study of literature and culture. The approach aims at the advancement of empirical and systemic research and methodology in theory construction and application through international and interdisciplinary co-operation. The principal tasks of the Society are to support projects through information and co-operation, to further personal contact in all areas of research supported by the Society, to support students and junior scholars in the field, to advance the application of empirical and systemic research in the humanities, and to organize national and international conferences. Founded in 1987 by Siegfried J. Schmidt (Siegen University), the Society holds bi-annual international conferences (see below).

“Remove advertising, disable a person or firm from preconising [proclaiming] its wares and their merits, and the whole of society and of the economy is transformed. The enemies of advertising are the enemies of freedom.”
—J. Enoch Powell (b. 1912)
“To develop an empiricist account of science is to depict it as involving a search for truth only about the empirical world, about what is actual and observable.... It must involve throughout a resolute rejection of the demand for an explanation of the regularities in the observable course of nature, by means of truths concerning a reality beyond what is actual and observable, as a demand which plays no role in the scientific enterprise.”
—Bas Van Fraassen (b. 1941)
“If usually the present age is no very long time, still, at our pleasure, or in the service of some such unity of meaning as the history of civilization, or the study of geology, may suggest, we may conceive the present as extending over many centuries, or over a hundred thousand years.”
—Josiah Royce (18551916)
“If a nations literature declines, the nation atrophies and decays.”
—Ezra Pound (18851972)
