Internal Combustion Engine - Measures of Engine Performance

Measures of Engine Performance

Engine types vary greatly in a number of different ways:

  • energy efficiency
  • fuel/propellant consumption (brake specific fuel consumption for shaft engines, thrust specific fuel consumption for jet engines)
  • power-to-weight ratio
  • thrust to weight ratio
  • Torque curves (for shaft engines) thrust lapse (jet engines)
  • Compression ratio for piston engines, overall pressure ratio for jet engines and gas turbines

Famous quotes containing the words measures of, measures, engine and/or performance:

One encounters very capable fathers abashed by their piano-playing daughters. Three measures of Schumann make them red with embarrassment.
    Alfred Döblin (1878–1957)

Those who, while they disapprove of the character and measures of a government, yield to it their allegiance and support are undoubtedly its most conscientious supporters, and so frequently the most serious obstacles to reform.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The machine unmakes the man. Now that the machine is perfect, the engineer is nobody. Every new step in improving the engine restricts one more act of the engineer,—unteaches him.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

The way to go to the circus, however, is with someone who has seen perhaps one theatrical performance before in his life and that in the High School hall.... The scales of sophistication are struck from your eyes and you see in the circus a gathering of men and women who are able to do things as a matter of course which you couldn’t do if your life depended on it.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)
