Influenza Vaccine - Purpose and Benefits of Annual Flu Vaccination

Purpose and Benefits of Annual Flu Vaccination

"Influenza vaccination is the most effective method for preventing influenza virus infection and its potentially severe complications." (Update1)

The concept of herd immunity is the foundation for all vaccinations. Herd immunity can be defined as immunity in a significant portion of a population, usually at least 80 percent, to a given disease. Whether they are immune because they have been vaccinated or because they have already encountered the illness and built their own natural immunity, they provide protection to others who are not immune because the illness has little chance of spreading in the population. Those in favor of the flu vaccine say it makes sense then for lawmakers and health care administrators to push for a vaccine mandate to bring the rate as close to 100 percent as possible.

Influenza vaccines ... cut the risk that elderly people will die of the virus in half and reduced the chance of hospitalization by more than a quarter, according to a study released today by the New England Journal of Medicine.

Famous quotes containing the words purpose, benefits and/or annual:

... my one aim and concentrated purpose shall be and is to show that women can learn, can reason, can compete with men in the grand fields of literature and science ... that a woman can be a woman and a true one without having all her time engrossed by dress and society.
    M. Carey Thomas (1857–1935)

It is with benefits as with injuries in this respect, that we do not so much weigh the accidental good or evil they do us, as that which they were designed to do us.—That is, we consider no part of them so much as their intention.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

...there was the annual Fourth of July picketing at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. ...I thought it was ridiculous to have to go there in a skirt. But I did it anyway because it was something that might possibly have an effect. I remember walking around in my little white blouse and skirt and tourists standing there eating their ice cream cones and watching us like the zoo had opened.
Martha Shelley, U.S. author and social activist. As quoted in Making History, part 3, by Eric Marcus (1992)
