Indio Hills Palms - California Fan Palm Oasis

California Fan Palm Oasis

The Indio Hills Palms State Reserve is managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. The Coachella Valley Preserve, a 2,206-acre (8.93 km²) area, is maintained by the non-profit Nature Conservancy, is one of the few in the desert with natural springs feeding oasis that support the only California native palm, the Washingtonia filifera or California Fan Palm. The San Andreas Fault, visible from the valley floor as a line of greenery along the base of the hills, captures groundwater that nurtures the palms. The 1,000 Palms Oasis grove is easily reached by foot from the trailhead.

Famous quotes containing the words california, fan, palm and/or oasis:

    I can’t earn my own living. I could never make anything turn into money. It’s like making fires. A careful assortment of paper, shavings, faggots and kindling nicely tipped with pitch will never light for me. I have never been present when a cigarette butt, extinct, thrown into a damp and isolated spot, started a conflagration in the California woods.
    Margaret Anderson (1886–1973)

    Already nature is serving all those uses which science slowly derives on a much higher and grander scale to him that will be served by her. When the sunshine falls on the path of the poet, he enjoys all those pure benefits and pleasures which the arts slowly and partially realize from age to age. The winds which fan his cheek waft him the sum of that profit and happiness which their lagging inventions supply.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    O Love, what hours were thine and mine,
    In lands of palm and southern pine;
    In lands of palm, of orange-blossom,
    Of olive, aloe, and maize and vine.
    Alfred Tennyson (1809–1892)

    Je célébrai mon jour de fête
    Dans une oasis d’Afrique
    Vêtu d’une peau de girafe.
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)
