Famous quotes containing the word theatre:

Our instructed vagrancy, which has hardly time to linger by the hedgerows, but runs away early to the tropics, and is at home with palms and banyans—which is nourished on books of travel, and stretches the theatre of its imagination to the Zambesi.
George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)

The poem of the mind in the act of finding
What will suffice. It has not always had
To find: the scene was set; it repeated what
    Was in the script.
    Then the theatre was changed
To something else. Its past was a souvenir.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

To save the theatre, the theatre must be destroyed, the actors and actresses must all die of the plague. They poison the air, they make art impossible. It is not drama that they play, but pieces for the theatre. We should return to the Greeks, play in the open air: the drama dies of stalls and boxes and evening dress, and people who come to digest their dinner.
    Eleonora Duse (1858–1924)
