Famous quotes containing the word writer:
“In this century the writer has carried on a conversation with madness. We might almost say of the twentieth-century writer that he aspires to madness. Some have made it, of course, and they hold special places in our regard. To a writer, madness is a final distillation of self, a final editing down. Its the drowning out of false voices.”
—Don Delillo (b. 1926)
“The shelf life of the modern hardback writer is somewhere between the milk and the yoghurt.”
—John Mortimer (b. 1923)
“[Tolstoy] discoveredand certainly never realized his discoveryhe discovered a method of picturing life which most pleasingly and exactly corresponds to our idea of time. He is the only writer I know of whose watch keeps time with numberless watches of his readers.”
—Vladimir Nabokov (18991977)
