Illinois State is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The teacher preparation programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and are certified by the Illinois State Board of Education. In addition, 22 programs hold discipline-based accreditation. Illinois State University is recognized as a top 100 national public university, ranking 83rd on the 2012 U.S. News and World Report list of the nation's top national public universities. Of the four public universities in Illinois to make that list, only the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Illinois Chicago were ranked higher in 2012. ISU was ranked 160th out of the 194 combined public and private National Universites to make the prestigious US News list in 2012. ISU also ranked #208 out of 258 combined public and private national universities in the US by Washington Monthly, making it the lowest ranked of the five top national universities in Illinois to make the prestigious list. Forbes magazine ranks ISU as #421 out of 650 combined public and private American colleges—ranking it 18th out of the 26 combined public and private Illinois colleges and universities to make this list of top academic institutions.
