History
Ice Capades was founded in February, 1940 in Hershey, Pennsylvania by nine men who called themselves the Arena Managers Association. They met to discuss forming an ice show to play in their arenas during the 1940-1941 entertainment season. The arenas represented were all well-known venues of the day:
- Boston Garden, represented by Walter A. Brown
- Rhode Island Auditorium (Louis Pieri)
- Buffalo Memorial Auditorium (Louis Jacobs)
- Hershey Sports Arena (John Sollenberger)
- Cleveland Arena (Al Sutphin)
- Springfield Coliseum (Eddie Shore)
- Philadelphia Arena (Peter A. Tyrrell)
- New Haven Arena (Nathan Podoloff)
- Pittsburgh Gardens (John H. Harris)
Harris had noted the popularity of ice skating displays during the intermissions between periods of hockey games.
The arena managers chose the name Ice Capades, and formed a group of skaters.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Every generation rewrites the past. In easy times history is more or less of an ornamental art, but in times of danger we are driven to the written record by a pressing need to find answers to the riddles of today.... In times of change and danger when there is a quicksand of fear under mens reasoning, a sense of continuity with generations gone before can stretch like a lifeline across the scary present and get us past that idiot delusion of the exceptional Now that blocks good thinking.”
—John Dos Passos (18961970)
“Culture, the acquainting ourselves with the best that has been known and said in the world, and thus with the history of the human spirit.”
—Matthew Arnold (18221888)
“It would be naive to think that peace and justice can be achieved easily. No set of rules or study of history will automatically resolve the problems.... However, with faith and perseverance,... complex problems in the past have been resolved in our search for justice and peace. They can be resolved in the future, provided, of course, that we can think of five new ways to measure the height of a tall building by using a barometer.”
—Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
