Hydrolysis usually means the cleavage of chemical bonds by the addition of water. Generally, hydrolysis is a step in the degradation of a substance. The word "hydrolysis" ( /haɪˈdrɒlɨsɪs/) comes from Greek roots hydro "water" + lysis "separation".
