Causes and Mechanism
Research on hot flashes is mostly focused on treatment options. The exact etiology and pathogenesis, or causes of vasomotor symptoms (VMS)- the clinical name for hot flashes - has not yet been fully studied. There is empirical knowledge that hints at reduced levels of estrogen as the primary cause of hot flashes. There are indications that hot flashes may be due to a change in the hypothalamus's control of temperature regulation. This would mean that the sensation of heat isn't merely imaginary, but due to actual changes in body core temperature.

Famous quotes containing the word mechanism:
“The two elements the traveler first captures in the big city are extrahuman architecture and furious rhythm. Geometry and anguish. At first glance, the rhythm may be confused with gaiety, but when you look more closely at the mechanism of social life and the painful slavery of both men and machines, you see that it is nothing but a kind of typical, empty anguish that makes even crime and gangs forgivable means of escape.”
—Federico García Lorca (18981936)
